Introduction to the National Engineering Research Center for  E-Learning

The National Engineering Research Center for E-Learning (NERCEL) was established by Central China Normal University (CCNU) as a dedicated research and development center for educational informatization. It focuses on turning scientific research into practical tools and solutions for digital education. NERCEL was recognized as a Hubei Provincial Engineering Research Center in 2004, approved by the Ministry of Education in 2006, and officially included in the national engineering research center program by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2009. It is currently the only national-level engineering research center in China that specializes in educational informatization. NERCEL plays a leading role in research, product development, and industry innovation in this field.

NERCEL aims to support the modernization and digital transformation of education in China through both original and integrated technological innovation. The center is committed to advancing research, driving technology development, and turning research results into real-world applications. It contributes actively to the goals outlined in China’s medium- and long-term education reform and development plans.

NERCEL has a strong team of researchers and technical experts. Its key research areas include digital learning standards and technologies, public service platforms and software for digital education, educational resource development and integration, and digital media content creation. The center also supports academic programs, including a Ph.D. program in Educational Information Science and Technology and master’s programs in Computer Application Technology, Management Science and Engineering, and Educational Technology.

Over the years, NERCEL has developed a number of innovative, proprietary technologies—such as the dual-panel digital classroom system, resource service systems, classroom interaction tools, learning management systems, and spatial video platforms. These solutions have been successfully adopted by many institutions and have generated both social and economic value.
